Choosing an Unconventional [Digital Nomad] Life

I’m currently planning a fun road trip with my sweet Mommy for when I visit next, so I have USA on my brain. It’s making me think of “what ifs”, like what if I never divorced, never left the U.S., chose a different career, etc.

Being able to work from anywhere was an UNINTENTIONAL ACCIDENT that changed my life & I consider my greatest gift after my daughter.

Today, millions make a conscience decision to build revenue streams that only requires a laptop and wifi. For me, though, back then, it was just luck!

MY MINI ORIGIN STORY
When I started my career in 1996, my very first job was with a California startup as a marketing coordinator. My daughter was just five months old, we lived in a house in the town I grew up in (had just relocated back from Barcelona), and I was married to a man from Spain.

The best decision I ever made was DIVORCING HIM when my daughter was 1-year-old. He was not a kind man, I was unhappy. I knew I would be a better mom as a happy woman than a miserable wife. I made enough money to support my daughter and I … which turned out helpful as my ex never paid child support. He moved back to Spain and was rarely a source of kindness or helpful in the decades that followed.

For exactly 20 years, I worked in branding & marcoms for local startups in 6 countries. My daughter and I lived an unconventional life full of adventure (some very bad, but mostly good). When she started uni, I changed countries more frequently and in 2016 I QUIT 9-to-5 LIFE.

3 FINAL THOUGHTS
I haven’t been on a date since the day I moved out of Pakistan in 2021. Haven’t been in a real relationship since 2005. And I don’t miss it. Relationships are hard work & from my experience not as enriching as total freedom.

I am 100% aware how lucky I am that my work skills are transferrable across different industries around the world and all I need is a laptop & wifi 👩🏼‍💻

Being a digital nomad & living in places like this is BLISS, but it’s also fraught with never-ending challenges. It takes effort to maintain positive MENTAL HEALTH & hard to make new friends with every move. But I don’t want to live any other way.
