Last week I spent 4 days in a lush Malaysian rainforest, experiencing the first meaningful DIGITAL DETOX of my life. My days were spent between fighting an involuntary reflex to reach for my mobile, heading out on adventures, or enjoying long hours of stillness … and it was great. Mostly.
The first day was marked by the slight STRESS of being unreachable. Like most of us, I’m so addicted to my apps that, at first, I couldn’t go an hour without robotically reaching to open one. Then I remembered I was on digital detox.
Slowly I started to enjoy NOT BEING ONLINE.
It was good for me. Felt CLEANSING and healthy and forced me to be different.
On the last day, with six hours to go, I felt lighter for having disconnected yet I was also looking forward to getting back to the digital world!
Except I wasn’t. Not fully.
Since moving back to Malaysia, I consciously accept only projects and client work that are exactly what I LOVE TO DO. And I only shoot videos I’m excited about.
With the exception of a new client I started working with in April.
I had worked with them when I last lived in KL and was honoured to do it again. But like life, things change. I could not find A HEALTHY WAY to have back-and-forth communication with the person I reported to and that affected my attitude toward the work in general, becoming a source of negativity in my day-to-day.
The detox made it clear: I was not the right person for them if I wanted to retain this renewed PEACE OF MIND, and stay on a positive mental health and weight loss path. So I did something I’ve never done before. I WALKED AWAY from a chef and restaurant team I respect so they could find someone better suited to their new team.
It’s a privilege, not a freedom everyone has, to be the architect of one’s own life. So I’m grateful to have full control over mine.
Prioritise your well-being — or better yet — live the life YOU DREAM OF if possible. If you have the FREEDOM to do it, please do it ❤️
