Life Abroad - My Diary

Why Does “Normal Life” Sound Like a Prison Sentence?

Is your life … enough? Mine never was.

Over the decades I have questioned why. Why does “normal life” sound like a prison sentence? Why did traditional real-life feel like something I was waiting to escape from?

As a mother and ex-wife, I wish the answers to those questions had been clearer. They triggered feelings of guilt and shame in me. The same feelings would come up when I was going through low moments in life and I wasn’t a good mother but that’s a different conversation.

Today, just like when I dropped out of uni at 20 years old and moved to Mexico in a Jeep Wrangler … my life doesn’t make sense when it’s standing still.

And why should it? There are a million ways to live life and it’s only HISTORY and TRADITION that makes us live it the same way as our grandmothers and grandfathers. Plus, women don’t need to be married for survival anymore. For me, I thrive best when I’m on my own and my days are mine alone to plan and execute (same reason I prefer solo travel…).

Today many of us can work from anywhere as long as we have wifi and some devices. It’s a TRUE GIFT. On a personal level, it definitely makes escaping a traditional and “tethered” life wayyyyyy easier than a decade ago when I was still working for tech startups around the globe as a marcom director.

The freedom to travel visa-free or with a visa-on-arrival makes country-hopping-life simple. Please know that it’s not lost on me that over the years my U.S. passport is part of what makes this life easy to live.

So my insatiable need for adventure, wanting to call unknown countries my home, and that lust for constant change remains. That part of my life is both a challenge AND a gift I’m grateful for ❤️

There are endless ways to live and be happy on this earth but only one I’ve found that really works for me…
