Life Abroad - My Diary

Living Abroad is Just More Exotic! (PS. I Miss Nomad Life)

Wandering. Adventuring. Exploring. That’s the aspirational way I’d categorise the nomadic lifestyle that I’ve just left behind. On paper (or I guess on Instagram) it looks tempting to live it. Seems like it’s full of mostly highs, which like any life it is not. But that life is addictive and exciting and a gift in all the best ways!

Being back in the USA for the first time since 2016 has me seeing the other TRUTH of nomad life or living abroad.

As my daughter so wisely said upon moving to the UK for uni, after she and I were living 3 years in India … “I miss living somewhere exotic”. And she was right! Aside from fun, new inventions like canned wine in the grocery store, most everything here in the U.S. is way too familiar.

My eyes don’t dance here with delight around every corner over some surprising moment like in a foreign country. I’m only 17 days into 60 yet I miss living in a culture that’s not completely known to me already. You know, a life that feels surprising each day.

What am I chasing?

Is there a flaw in me that I can’t find happiness in my home country anymore? Am I always going to be looking for that next experience? Will the grass always be greener on the other side, no matter how many countries I visit or how many new delights life serves up each day?

It’s pretty safe to say now that nomad life and life abroad is my happy place and “normal life” now?
